DNA Extraction from Strawberry

Commercial strawberries are octoploid (8n), so each cell has eight of every kind of chromosome.  This DNA extraction smells so much better than extractions using onion or liver.  Complete instructions for strawberry DNA extraction appear on numerous web pages.

Method:
(March, 2004)

Dna prep enzymes salt.jpg (77901 bytes)
Add meat tenderizer (enzymes), salt, and shampoo or detergent to a container with
one frozen strawberry.
DNA prep mash.JPG (68991 bytes)
Mash together for
2 minutes.

Resulting mixture.

DNA prep stir.JPG (66987 bytes)
Add tap water.
Stir for another minute.
DNA prep filter.JPG (82624 bytes)
Filter mixture
through cheesecloth.
  DNA prep wait.JPG (73849 bytes)
Wait 2 minutes
while the filtrate drips into the glass tube.
DNA prep ethanol.JPG (77766 bytes)
Pour a layer of ice cold ethanol over the strawberry extract.

The white, cottony spider web-looking material is DNA.
DNA strings.JPG (85709 bytes)
Spool rope-like strands of DNA onto a wooden splint.
DNA clumps.JPG (40377 bytes)
Or skip the filtering step and collect large clumps of DNA from the same amount of strawberry.
