Natural Selection (to the tune of "Oh, Susanna")
Darwin noticed that the offspring were not
all alike;
And the parents made so many that they could not all survive.
There's always competition for the food and mates and space;
The ones with better-suited variations win the race.
Variation: whatever comes along
...
Natural selection keeps a population
strong.
Better-suited individuals are the ones who
mate.
Their children's generation tends to have the gene that's great.
After many years go by they'll all show these good features.
It works for protists, plants, bacteria, fungi, and all creatures.
Variation: whatever comes
along ...
Natural selection keeps a
population strong.
Protein Synthesis (to the tune of "Yankee Doodle")
Genes are recipes for
proteins--found in DNA.
Enzymes open up the base pairs; bring in RNA.
RNA -- transcribes the gene;
-- goes
out of the nucleus;
--
meets a ribosome and protein synthesis gets serious.
mRNA has the codons, each made
of 3 bases.
tRNAs' anticodons try to match these places.
tRNA brings amino acids to the scene ...
Amino acids build a chain that folds into a protein.
The Carbon Compound Song
I
am a carbohydrate
made of monosaccharides ...
Sugars and starches
Store and give energy.

The building blocks of proteins
are the 20 amino acids ...

The two nucleic acids are
made of nucleotides.

"The Light Reactions"
Who soaks up light to fling out an
electron
to a higher level
full of energy ....
Passes it down through electron transport proteins
to chlorophyll or NADP (plus) ?
The chlorophyll ---------------- the
chlorophyll. The chlorophyll!
The chlorophyll ---------------- the chlorophyll. The
chlorophyll!
Water splits apart to donate the
electrons
throw away the oxygen
hang on to the H-plus
H-plus rush out to generate some ATP
and fasten onto NADP (plus) .
What is the point of all these light
reactions?
Calvin Cycle needs the energy and hydrogens.
NADPH is loaded up with both of these --
Plus energy is in the ATPs.
